Vicki is a gifted stager and I recommend using her with great enthusiasm. When I saw how Vicki staged her first house in South Nyack, it was just how I wanted my own home to look. Her staging definitely increased the sales price. Her second house, a large 1790 Gothic in Grandview, had 50 years of neglect. Each month revealed new problems. Yet Vicki completed the renovation under budget and on time. When the house went on the market, all 40 brokers at the Open House were amazed at Vicki’s staging and her success at bringing this historic home back to life.

The best gift to give to your home and to yourself is Vicki Samuels. She is immensely talented, quick to re-create any interior or exterior, and the hardest worker I know. In two hours she took a guest room I couldn’t bare to enter and transformed it. She then re-organized my library bookcase, giving it not just order but great style. She sat with me, going through closets stuffed with junk and item by item she patiently helped me emotionally to either throw out, recycle, or neatly store. She then re-created the space, giving me much more room. On the outside, Vicki took my depressing New York City garden, which my family didn’t use, and landscaped an incredible beautiful city retreat. I can’t wait until Vicki comes back to continue organizing every drawer, every closet, every storage area and finessing each bookcase, glass cabinet, fireplace mantel, and table top to highlight my own individual’s style.

Vicki’s skills as a top Network News producer for 2 decades are a perfect fit for making her a top Home Stylist: Creative Thinker. Problem Solver. Flexible. Fast Worker. Great Listener. Good Under Pressure. At the Networks, Vicki was unique for using whatever was on hand to quickly turn a bland, cold interview space into a warm, compelling background, reflective of the individual being profiled, for the cameras to capture. Her ability to easily bond with all types of people, whether celebrities or soccer moms and be sensitive to their needs, is crucial to working with diverse home owners. When Vicki started working on home interiors and exteriors, I was impressed with her wide ranging style, resourcefulness, and creative vision. She transforms spaces while preserving the character and integrity of her clients’ homes.

This category will give tips I’ve collected over the years on everything from the home to the body and anything inbetween. Please add your own tips on anything by emailing me at vicki@vickishomestyling.com. Please give your name and, if you remember the source, cite that as well.

THE HOME:

Get rid of white moisture spots on wood furniture: Rub mayonnaise on to the white spot and put aluminum foil over this so the oil doesn’t dry out. In a few hours, clean off the mayonnaise and the spot should be gone. If there is some remaining, do the procedure again. I have successfully tried this many, many times. From friend and News correspondent, Edie Magnus.

Cleaning Stains on Furniture Fabric: White vinegar is great for cleaning lots of things. I actually got a huge red wine stain, that had set in 7 months before, on a cotton velvet uphostered chair to disappear by constantly rubbing the stain with a cloth dipped into the white vinegar. Vinegar also gets rid of mildew, cleans stains from pots and pans when boiled with equal parts water…the list goes on. A great book to get is “Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things”, put out by Reader’s Digest.

THE BODY:

Have an inch?It could be from anything, a mosquito bite to a rash. Rub lavender oil over the area and the itch goes away. From friend, Cis Wilson.

Pool swimming and your hair: To help save the condition of your hair, first wet it throughly with water. Then, of course, put on your bathing cap. When hair is already saturated, the chlorene can’t saturate it as well. Of course, one can also use creme rinse instead of water, but then this leaks into the pool water. Told to me by a seasoned swimmer at my health club and confirmed by several hair dressers.

Weight & Eating with Friends: Often when we are full but have to remain sitting at the table, we will compulsively eat what’s left on the plate. A friend of mine, once very overweight, developed the following approach when eating with others. When he felt full, he would destroy the remaining food on the plate by putting ketshup, pepper or some other substance all over the remaining food. This technique helped him to lose a lot of weight. Larry Schnur Weight Watchers suggests that at the beginning of the meal, have the waitress box half of the entree to take home.

I had been living in my new house for a year and felt frustrated at my inability to make it feel like a home. There were unattractive interior aspects that I didn’t know how to downplay. I couldn’t find the right way to arrange my furniture. I couldn’t decide where each painting should go. Yet, as soon as Vicki walked in, she burst with ideas. From room to room, she had innovative and inexpensive solutions for how to camouflage my home’s defects and how to best use what I own. After Vicki redesigned my house, it finally felt like the sanctuary I had always wanted and the showplace I could be excited to show off to my friends.
